The Purple Cliffs and other stories

This chest is the offering for the 2004 NH Furniture Masters exhibit and auction. It was inspired by a stool at the Museum of Fine Art in Boston. I had in mind to make a footlocker-style chest, and the stool had the general shape that the chest eventually took. The relief carvings on the panels are renditions of paintings at the Beijing Musem Art Museum.

bulletMa Ho Chi 1130 to 1172, an illustration from the poem "The Purple Cliffs" by the emperor Su Shih.
bulletHua Yen 1683 to 1755, "Eagle on a Maple Tree."
bulletShen Chou 1427 to 1509, "Poet on a Mountain."
bulletChao Chi-chien 1829 to 1904, "Flowers."

This chest is 18 inches high, 22 wide and 33 long; therefore it is also used as a bench or a coffee table. When used this way you can place it in the center of a room to show all four sides.

"The Purple Cliffs" is currently available for $4600. Click here.
