This chest is the offering for the 2004 NH Furniture Masters exhibit and auction. It was inspired by a stool at the Museum of Fine Art in Boston. I had in mind to make a footlocker-style chest, and the stool had the general shape that the chest eventually took. The relief carvings on the panels are renditions of paintings at the Beijing Musem Art Museum.
| Ma Ho Chi 1130 to 1172, an illustration from the poem "The Purple Cliffs" by the emperor Su Shih. | |
| Hua Yen 1683 to 1755, "Eagle on a Maple Tree." | |
| Shen Chou 1427 to 1509, "Poet on a Mountain." | |
| Chao Chi-chien 1829 to 1904, "Flowers." |
This chest is 18 inches high, 22 wide and 33 long; therefore it is also used as a bench or a coffee table. When used this way you can place it in the center of a room to show all four sides.
"The Purple Cliffs" is currently available for $4600. Click here.
