October 21

NH Furniture Masters Association, NHFMA, annual auction at the Wentworth by the Sea, Marriott Hotel in New Castle, NH. This is a gala event at which many excellent furniture pieces by New Hampshire's best are sold. The event also included a Silent Auction of smaller pieces. These items are donated by the masters and proceeds support out educational programming.

For more about the Furniture Masters go to http://www.furnituremasters.org/

By the way, For the 2007 auction  I’m offering two pieces for the NHFMA exhibition and auction.

bulletWhite Bears with Black Noses reminds us of harmonious living. It is a love seat bench carved as two polar bears, similar to the Black Bears in the auction two years ago. A ‘step by step’ of how this bench was made will be published in the January,2008  issue of Woodcarvers Illustrated.
bulletBoy Holds Tiger is inspired by a Tai Chi position of the same name. This is a humorous piece, but it also has a philosophical side, reflecting upon the duality of our own nature. It is a chair made from teak with a lichen covered stone as the seat, and carved in a whimsical/primitive way as, well, a boy and a tiger.

I'll post some photos as soon as I have them.

Other interesting news about Jeffrey Cooper

Upcoming in Woodcarver's Illustrated

The making of White Bears with Black Noses will be the subject of a 'step by step' article in the January 2008 Issue of Woodcarver's Illustrated magazine.

Fine Woodworking magazine

The entryway table "Reading in Autumn," is featured in the Gallery section of the April issue of Fine Woodworking magazine.

Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, Rockport ME

We can always learn and improve our skills. This summer I will be taking a carving seminar with master sculptor Chris Pye. My goal is to learn new techniques, and also to study his teaching techniques. I'm planning to develop a curriculum to teach others about sculpture.

The Workshop

You can see a feature chapter about me in my shop in the Taunton Press hardcover book "The Workshop," by Scott Gibson.

What's in the docket?

I seem to have had a run on ecclesiastical pieces. My next project is for a Torah Stand for Temple Bnai Israel in Laconia, NH, and then a Torah cabinet for Temple Israel in Portsmouth, NH. I am working on a design for another Torah stand for a synagogue in California, and I have an order to fill for a crosier for a Bishop on Long Island.

How to commission

If you have an idea for something you'd like please jump over to my Guest Registry. You may like something sculptural and artistic, or a piece of 'regular' furniture that you'd like to be made personal for yourselves, or some garden art.  We can talk; I'll find out about your needs and budget; I'll send a few sketches and develop one you like into a detailed design for your approval. Then I'll put you on my schedule and when it's done I'll ship it. You'll become my latest collector.
