An Artist's Statement

"To stay enthused as a woodworker I need to be making things that are more than a commodity, that are exciting and unique. This leads me toward sculptural furniture.

Over the past several years I have developed a carving style which is distinct and identifiable. It is not too literal, somewhat naif and has a particular warmth which draws people to it. This makes my commissions appropriate to any enviroment where they may be displayed. Much of my work has been devoted to a series of children's chairs carved into animals. Quality art oriented toward children helps them to learn to appreciate finer things. Many of these children's chairs have been placed in Children's hospitals and pediatric centers. This is gratifying to me since I feel that by enriching their hospital environment, I am helping with their healing process. Some of my work has been adult sized furniture. It has a wide range of applicability. All of my work is ruggedly built taking care to avoid sharply protruding ears, horns and such. Making sure it is safely handled and climbed upon allows it to be enjoyed to its fullest

I plan to continue with the animal carved furniture that is gaining in recognition. Thinking of my longer term goals, I hope to become involved in more public art projects. This would allow me to expand my artistic talents and to reach a wider audience."
